Year 1

Year 1

Year One at Temple School is a very special class. The first year of primary education, the children are eased into the demands of statutory education in a variety of ways. LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

Smiles, Fun and Learning! These are a few of the elements that characterise the atmosphere of the Year One group at Temple School. The average age of learners in year one is 5 years and the year group typically consists of 5 arms, with an average number of 15 children per class. Each class at every given time has two staff members supervising the activities of the learners and the learning process; the class teacher and the assistant class teacher, both of whom are well trained, experienced and well equipped to build children at this level. The kids are never left unattended. Year One at Temple is the bedrock of primary education.

Our classrooms are specifically designed to reflect the attitude we desire to groom in our pupils; Happiness and an Enthusiasm to Learn. Bright colours, beautiful displays, amazing 21st-century learning and teaching aids, Visual stimulators, comfortable seating and writing spaces, structured yet flexible furniture arrangement and Kinesthetic facilities are just a few of the features that define our classrooms in Year One. LEARNING TIME

Our official curriculum is a unique one which blends the British Key Stage One curriculum with our local Nigerian Primary One curriculum. Our basic/core subjects are Numeracy (which involves all introductory levels of the basics of Arithmetic), Literacy (where the foundation is constructed for Grammar & Punctuation, Reading, Phonics, Spelling & Vocabulary, Writing and Speaking & Listening) and Science (which develops a stronger foundation of the living and physical world around us). However, to create a robust and wholesome learning experience, we have included several other key enhancement subjects- Creative Arts, French, Music, ICT, P.H.E, Design and Technology and Citizenship. The goal of our extensive curriculum is to ensure that as our learners move out of Year One, progressing through the other stages of their Primary education, they are grounded spiritually, socially and morally, confident and enthusiastic about every aspect of school life.

Assemblies at the Year one group are always interesting to organise for several reasons. They are fun and give the children an unfettered opportunity to express their creative sides, and they never cease to amaze everyone. The themes of our assemblies are carefully selected to ensure that while fun, happiness and physical activity are the show of the day, the core is also intellectual and about learning the life lessons integrated into our curriculum.

The focus on Parental Involvement in Year One cannot be overemphasised. We develop a continuous two-way stream of communication with our parents via e-mails, phone calls and face-to-face time, to ensure that through the entire process of child development in the year, we keep abreast of happenings on the home-front while correspondingly giving regular updates of activities in class as it relates to individual pupils.

Another aspect of the Year one experience we are big on is Co-Curricular Learning activities. While our amazing pupils may be too young to participate in visiting and helping out at the Old People’s Home, Orphanages and Hospital Children Wards supported by the school, we enjoy the co-curricular experience by way of Field trips. These excursions allow the learners to get a feel for the practical aspects of some of the theoretical concepts treated in class. It also prepares them for the more advanced co-curricular activities they will be experiencing as they progress from Years 2 through 6; again a foundation-laying process.

Year One also participates in and experiences every other aspect of Temple School life such as our Sports Day, Fun Day, Mathlympics competition, Whiz Kid competition, Science Quiz, Science Fair and a host of others; We might be the little ones, but there is no keeping us out of the fun and activities.

So we welcome you with smiles, open arms and a commitment founded in passion for building these little ones.
